The proposed standard aims to make asphalt mixture testing less complex.
ASTM International’s road and paving materials committee (D04) is developing a new standard (WK95270) that introduces an AI-assisted method for performing the dynamic modulus (E*) mixture test, crucial for pavement design.
The fundamental/mechanistic tests subcommittee is developing WK95270.
According to ASTM member Richard Steger, the proposed standard uses a modified version of ASTM’s D8225 test for determining cracking tolerance index of asphalt mixture.
Steger explains that generating test data for dynamic modulus is challenging, while the modified ASTM D8225 test is relatively easy. AI and neural networks connect these methods.
This effort aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #9 on industry, innovation, and infrastructure.
